WELL...It's been probably 5+ years since I played CDs through my computer (my CDP is in the shop). You know how you can allow the option of your computer to "Search for the title"? The last time I used this almost every Classical title I had outside of the Major Labels came up as a dud..."Not found". Things have certainly improved, but they aren't yet "all knowing". I'm using Windows Media Player 9, and whatever database it looks to for Title/Track details, it finds ALMOST EVERYTHING. I tried to trick it with some off-the-beaten-path recordings...
(1) It FOUND Bartok Duos on Astree (Vegh, Lysy)
(2) It FOUND Martinu Sym 1,3,5 on Czech Multisonic (Ancerl)
(3) It COULD NOT FIND Pettersson Sym 14 on Phono Sueca (Comissiona)
(3) It FOUND (Wow!) the 1995 BBC Magazine Wagner (Anne Evans at the Proms)
(4) It FOUND the 1992 Philips Wagner Bayreuther Festspiele HIGHLIGHT SAMPLER (an In-Store Freebie!)
(5) It FOUND the Aulos Shostakovich Cycle (Kondrashin)
(6) It found the Marston label, and Gimell stuff
(7) FOUND ECM...but NOT CPO (a pretty big label -- Nothing from this label -- surprising)
For Jazz...
(1) It FOUND Bill Evans on a Japanese XRCD
(2) If FOUND Carla Cook on MAXJAZZ
(3) It FOUND the Uri Caine Village Vanguard on Winter & Winter
(4) It even FOUND Maria Schneiders "Concert in the Garden" -- which I thought was "private label" type stuff
All in all, mighty impressive, and much better than in the past.
