I'm not so sure that is true, concerning BR's bass drum. If you have the Nat Cole - Lester Young - Rich trio record, a casual listen will play that out. Nat Cole had a good left hand, but he is not the only reason a bass player is not missed on that recording.
I'm far far from BR's biggest fan, and I am certainly not a drummer- but I have only heard great drummers speak of him with something approaching awe when it came to technique, and never have I heard anyone say that he could not play this or that component of the kit. Oh well, opinions really do vary...
