Can someone describe this tenor saxist's life and career? What became of him? Seems there's little of his music out there.I have what appears to be a special issue cd, "This is Billy Mitchell", a reissue of vinyl, with a gold wrapper on the edge of the cd cover: "Smash Records", apparently reissued by Verve. The cover art is a repro of the original record, which seems to have been recorded in both stereo and in a mono version, October 1962. This 2003 cd version is of outstanding quality.
This is pretty fine jazz music. The man had the goods.
Not to be confused with Blue Mitchell, an outstanding trumpet man.
