While the statement *is* rather a coldly rational view of a pastime we hold dear, please remember that the act of passively listening to music is peculiarly Western, and relatively recent. The movement of music from the Courts and Churches (ambient/ritualistic use) to the newfangled "Concert Hall" (birth of the 'artist/hero' and his passive listeners), happened around the 17th-18th Century.Music helping social groups cohere? Well, the rise of Nationalism in Europe and the Nationalist composer came about because dividing lines between countries were often spongy and vague. It was a way of re-enforcing group identity. Think of Finlandia.
