I think I am most sensitive to violin because I used to play viola (albeit badly). I can't judge cello or any other instrument as well. By playing an instrument, you gain an intimacy with nuance that is not otherwise achievable, even if you lack the talent (as I do) to play to the level of your vision.Viola technique and violin technique are very close; cellos sound substantially different, closer to bass.
So your extension of my thesis may have its own merit; I'm lack the knowledge to judge.
