Hi-When I was growing up, my father was a jazz fan, my mother had classical piano training, and my father's sister's kids (I had the impression, regardless whether they wanted to) were in a (for the 1960s, terminally uncool) barbershop quartet.
A couple of them stuck it out and went pro, so to speak.
There's lots of history. It is its own fascinating little corner of American culture. I do not turn my nose up at their efforts--after all, face it, the Beach Boys were Barbershop with a rhythm section, just the way the Beatles were Music Hall with a beat. Hey, kill me, I don't care.
Anyway, there is an umbrella organization, www.barbershop.org, and I am sure that their current national champions, whoever they are, will knock your socks off. If I got to pick the repertoire, I would consider doing a barbershop recording some day, I just have a lot of other things higher up on the list.
Cheerio,
JM
