I suggest that you also look for the works of another contemporary Japanese composer: Somei Satoh. He did a beautiful piece named "Birds in Warped Time II," a minimalist piece for piano and violin. The violin is actually imitating the sound of a Japanese shakuhachi flute. This is lovely, peaceful music, but not of the mind-numbing variety (unimaginative, boring repetition) that is common to this genre.
