First, I don't think the issue has anything uniquely to do with classical music. I think there is an issue here for many, regardless of musical tastes.Since my wife died, I no longer have a problem but while she was alive there were occasional issues with some music because she did not share a fair bit of my musical tastes, both classical and otherwise, and also because although I do have a dedicated listening room, it also has 2 permanently open archway entrances, one of which leads to an open plan area which includes the living room where the TV is located. I think it's a mistake to assume that dedicated listening rooms are necessarily soundproofed, or even that they have doors that can be closed on them. Mine certainly doesn't. I suspect that things worked as well as they did more because she was willing to do other things than because I was.
I also think that males tend to dominate the audio/video scene at home largely because it's a hobby with a strong technical component that males seem more interested in than females and the end result of that is that they tend to see the equipment as 'their toy' to some degree and so do the rest of the family. That extends beyond the issue of who gets to use it most to who gets to choose what gets played as well, and even what software is bought.
If I had a partner again, I think my ideal setup would be a dedicated room which was soundproofed and which could be closed off from the rest of the house. That allows different people to enjoy different activities without disturbing each other. Still, I don't think that goes far enough. There is also the issue of what music and DVDs get purchased and giving each partner a fair go in assembling a collection of discs they wish to hear/view, plus a fair go at using the best system when they wish at those times when both don't want to listen/watch the same thing.
