...I collect 78s and I can't even tell you how many HJ 78s I see and never bother to pick up. I'm talking about Columbia stuff mostly from the '40s. Maybe that's a mistake, but it seems that for every decent side from that period there are 20 that I find unlistenable, no matter how good the playing is. The Capitol sides have their share of dance stuff, but it's always well played and enjoyable enough, even though it's not really the kind of thing I like to hear very often. Here's a good one that's available on CD: Harry James and His Orchestra 1964 Live! In the Holiday Ballroom Chicago, Jazz Hour Compact Classics JH1001. This label has issued a series of radio broadcasts from private collections, often with (they claim) of the help of the musicians themselves and in accordance with applicable laws. My friend bought his copy through the Union, so they're probably honest in that claim. Sound quality on this disc is not up to the Capitol stuff by a longshot, but the band is in good form, and the performance of Ray Bryant's "Cuban Chant" is worth it alone--a SMOKING premonition of what Buddy's bands would sound like.
BR was with HJ for a long time before he finally led his own band permanently. I'm told he kept trying to quit, but Harry would give him more money and he's agree to stay. Buddy finally just got too expensive and was allowed to leave.
I'm glad so many here seemed to enjoy that one.
