... the Monk/Trane thing completely overshadowed another fantastic historical performance that was also unearthed last year, the Gillespie/Parker Town Hall concert from 1945.The Bird/Diz thing is in not nearly as good sound (which is understandable, being 12 years earlier), and it's on a much smaller label (Uptown Jazz, as opposed to Blue Note), and the first track (Bebop, in which sound levels are all over the place and Parker, in typical fashion, doesn't show up till mid-way through) is a bummer. But the Town Hall show is still an incredible performance, and about as close to the Holy Grail of bebop as we're likely to get. Any other year, it might've caused quite a stir, but the Monk/Trane thing kinda stole the show.
All that said, I couldn't agree more about the excellence of the Monk/Coltrane. I would dare say it's become one of my very favorite recordings--a true classic to stand with anything either of these giants did, IMO.
