according to lore and dueling Down Beat blindfold test interviews from around the time of this performance (but who reads that stuff), Monk and OP had a real dislike for each other's music. But here, after tapping Wynton Kelly on the shoulder and sitting to play, OP quotes, with respect and care, to my ears, Well You Needn't, before launching into yet another Monk piece, Hackensack. And from what we know of OP coupled with fact that he had seniority on that bandstand, it is safe to assume that, if he didn't call the tune, he sure approved of it before they hit.
All of which goes to prove: Don't believe everything you read in the jazz press.
