With Joe McQueen and friends, just finished listening to this last nite and feel compelled to comment on the wonderful effort that the team must have put into this recording.The most surprising aspect is how much dynamic life and energy there is to this recording. Especially when listening at much higher levels than I would normally listen to most recordings, exactly as its stated in the CDs booklet. And exactly the opposite that I normally institute in most listening sessions.
Now I have dual mono Plinius SA102s coughing up something like 400+ plus watts per channel along with 2 subs, so one would expect some degree of dynamic capability with this setup, call it available headroom. But the thing so uniquely different with this CD is how much volume I CAN apply, quite a bit higher levels with no discomfort then at the proper times, horns and various instruments come through with startling dynamics that just seem lifelike, then the sound settles back to its appropriate levels. Sounds like close miking yet they clearly state its not the case in the majority of the recording, I find this aspect amazing and worth commenting on.
The PRAT is also intact along with the soundstage dimmensions, interplay between musicians and instruments as well as they're individual placements being very revealing with excellent stage depth as well, all clearly audible on this recording.The music is top notch as well, so if your into classical jazz at all and even if your not, this is one worth getting just for reference purposes IMHO.
Features Joe McQueen on sax, Evan Coombs on bass, Clayton Furch on piano, Don Keipp on drums, Skip Musgrave on trumpet and Brad Wheeler on harmonica.
So my hats off to Ray Kimber and his team for putting together such an enjoyable performance from;
Joe McQueen, a living legend recreating and complimenting other artists music, with a commitment and verve that sounds as if hes still playing in his prime and hopefully for some time to come.Keep up the great work Ray and I for one have two of your recordings ans I'm looking to add more, both now as well as in the future!
