Don Shirley's latest (last?) CD "At Home With Don Shirley" is a superb bowed bass recording, from both the musical and technical standpoints. Instruments (piano, double bass, and bass) all complement each other in an especially natural way. The acoustics are on the reverberant side, but everything sings! At least the piano (and the other instruments) have not been "close-miked", so that your ears seem to be inside the piano or right up against the bass strings. Utilizing DSD technology, an SACD version is supposed to be available too. On LP, Shirley's "Waterboy" is not to be missed. Don Shirley makes piano and bass seem like eggs and ham, the pairing is so musically sympathetic...
