Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Ah, but which Szeryng?

I know of two complete stereo recordings by the incomparable Szeryng: one for Columbia done in (I think) the early 1960s, and a later set for DG from the 1970s. The DG set has had much wider circulation. The earlier set seems to come and go more quickly. (It's currently available in the UK and should be obtainable from any decent British web retailer, such as MDT.) I have the DG, and a violinist friend of mine has the Columbia; a quick comparison did not reveal significant differences in Szeryng's basic approach, except that the earlier set may have been slightly fresher and more accurate. (Both sets sound very good, BTW.) Either way, I quite agree that Szeryng's Bach takes a back seat to no one.
