Toscanini Patetica in stereo

217.57.131.194

IDIS (Istituto Discografico Italiano - a small domestic label) has just issued as IDIS6500/6501 a "twofer" with excerpts from Wagner plus Ciakovskij's 6th conducted by Arturo Toscanini - recorded in stereo.

The excerpts from Wagner are the Carnegie Hall concert of April 4, 1954 which has been available for long on CD e.g. on Music & Arts as ATRA3008. The IDIS version is in slight more pleasant sound than the M & A save that (IMO) most of the musical image has gone, presumably due to phase variations induced by equalization.

The Ciakovskij's 6th is reportedly a concert of March 21, 1954 previously unknown to me in this stereo version. The performance (fairly on the brisk side) is unquestionably high level, and the sound more than passable other than for the rather unusual location of the strings (violins 1st and 2nd split left and right and double basses perceived as center/slightly left).

Is anyone in a position to shed more light on this (the IDIS booklet is rather tight-lipped, which makes me even more cautious than usual with these historical reissues by fellow countrymen of mine)?
