Note that even I don't think Streisand has been popular primarily due to her politics, but the theory suggests she herself thinks this way. And knows, for that reason, she can get away with her antics. (If one wants to blow several grand on a Streisand concert, it's not my business.)My only problem with Streisand is purely on musical terms. Why she is popular can be for a lot of things.... And like artists such as Eminem and Madonna, I think today's society often rewards music artists for reasons that have very little to do with the product delivered.
And once we realize that, we can let go such reverence paid to artists that a lot of us think don't deserve it. For knowing the great story of The Emperor's New Clothes, our populace has been conditioned to form opinion based on consensus and media exposure, not on personal perception of the music product itself. And hence if an artist we think is awful or overrated is propped up as an "all-time great", we should take such hyperbole with a grain of salt. All we can do is voice opinion of what we individually think is good or not so good.
