Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: Rhapsody in Blue - Slow versions......

Just for fun this morning I listened to about 8 of my recordings with Rhapsody in Blue. If you like Bernstein (and I do!) his 58-59 Columbia recording with the NYPO is big boned, piano spotlighted, and classic Lenny. He clearly loves this music.

The next in line, and my second choice for performance, as well as sonics, is Previn and the LSO. Better sound, slightly less spot light on the piano, and I think more in touch with Gershwin (Lenny is more in touch with Lenny). Previns Pittsburg recording on Phillips is excellent as well, but the sound is a bit recessed.

FWIW, of the 'fast' versions, those which actually sound like Gershwins music at the time of original performances like much Broadway music (listen to authentic Broadway Musical's and you hear the same up tempo music, so typical of the 23's and 30's), I preferred the MTT/LA recording. The Wild/Fiedler performance is 'very' up tempo and despite the raves and many reissues the performance has recieved the recording is 2 dimensional and that is reduced to a center image not all that much larger than mono.

If I were to reduce my recording of Gershwins RinB these would be the three I would keep.

FWIW.
