good find! i think of him as an academic singer because you can understand the lyrics as he takes you through them.my first records by him were 'bop for kerouac' and 'kerouac then and now' where he exhibits a VERY hip stance. kurt elling, his protege, is much like him in that period.
he always has had great personnel lists of backup guys, and although quite sensitive about his balding condition (he wears a rug), he still comes across well in the live videos I've seen.
i NEVER pass up one of his records. rah is one to have for sure. as for kurt elling, start with 'the messenger'.
