Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Yes. More . . .

. . . when describing his soon-to-be premiered 2nd symphony he told his friends, "You have only to sit down at the piano and strike the chord of F-minor several times in succession, first in the treble, then in the bass, fortissimo and pianissimo, and you will gradually gain a vivid impression of my latest."

The work was so gloomy he said he would have the score printed with a black border, while the musicians would wear crepe on their sleeves.

Of course, it turned out to be one of his sunniest works, and in the brightest key possible.

Once the symphony was heard and he had to own up to his shenanigans, he said, "I do not know whether I have a pretty symphony. I must enquire of skilled persons."

Later he wrote a friend who hadn't heard it yet, telling him to "drum nothing but Berlioz, Liszt, and Wagner" for a month or so beforehand. "Then its tender amiability will do a lot of good."
