Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

I used to feel that way about Joe Lovano.

Some of my friends in Chicago felt the same way too. I think though, this had more to do with JL's sometimes peculiar language as a leader compared to the more straight-ahead things he might play with Tom Harrell or even John Scofield in the captain's chair. Over time, I've assimilated his language better, and felt less and less that Lovano was best as a sideman. I suspect that those who feel this way about Coltrane do so for the same reasons I did about Lovano.

Mulgrew Miller is a wonderful pianist, but I tend to prefer to listen to him as a sideman. The mood and choice of material on his albums just doesn't excite me all that often. I find Phil Woods often has questionable taste as a leader, too.

Chris Potter is an interesting case--many here seem to feel his dates as a leader are lacking. I haven't heard any of them myself, so I can't comment on that one, but it does seem to be a popular sentiment.
