Re: Bill Evans "Secret Sessions"- how is sound quality?

The reviews you have read sum it up pretty well - historic performances - mediocre sound. The recordings sound like what they are - a single mic in the audience. There is plenty of air (hiss) and room sound. Definitely not close mic'd multitrack. The beauty is that these are master acoustic players. They achieve a great dynamic balance through skill and control, not mixing. However, there are many places in the box set when the drummers switch to sticks where the cymbals overload the mic/tape. Thankfully, it was mainly a brushes gig.

It's Bill and Eddie Gomez (Teddy Kotick on a few tracks) with a rotating drummer's chair. As far as I know, these are the only audio recordings of Bill's trio with Joe Hunt and John Dentz (I've seen video with Dentz) - two very nice drummers. The stuff with Philly Joe is fantastic.

Overall, well worth it if you're a die-hard Evans fan. The energy of the performances more than makes up for the sound IMHO.
