Picking up on KellyG's thread about your recommendations for classical music that is so moving and beautiful that it would convince all who could be convinced . . . I'm surprised at the number of suggestions for vocal music/opera.While I'm an opera lover myself - and a former voice student - I think that vocal music is not the way into the novice's heart. A friend who is a classical music DJ says they never program vocal music because it's a proven channel-switcher for listeners.
I really tend to think of vocal as an acquired taste (along with a couple others, like string quartets).
Appreciate your thoughts: why (or why not) vocal as the way into the novice's heart?
