I was so down in the dumps when I found out that the new Paavo Jarvi recording of Orff's "Carmina Burana" on the Alpha label was NOT available in Dolby Atmos. And I don't know what possessed me to search on "Carmina Burana" earlier today - I think I may have been checking (since I didn't want to tell anybody wrong!) to see that there were indeed three other recordings which WERE available in Dolby Atmos on Apple Music. In a way, it's kind of surprising which ones they are: Rattle/BPO on Warner, Ozawa/BPO on Philips, and that Chinese recording on DG, "Carmina Burana from the Forbidden City" (never heard of any of the performers except for soprano Aida Garifulina).
Anyway, I decided to check the Jarvi recording one last time, hoping against hope that I would find the magic words, Dolby Atmos. But wait! There they were on the listing now! I tried one of the tracks, and, sure enough, the Dolby Atmos indicator lit up on my pre/pro. Apple had finally come through! This is so great now to hear the recording's extended range and detail as well as its projection of 3D space in a work which really needs this kind of extension! I was particularly impressed by the bass - which goes way low with impressive vividness and detail, but maintains its naturalness at all times. There was only one place where I felt that Jarvi set a foot wrong: that was in the next to last number, "Blanziflor et Helena: Ave formosissima" where, for some reason, the conductor doesn't bring out the string responses to the full chorus exclamations. But overall, I'm jazzed and grateful now - and I'm looking forward to Jarvi's next recording with the ZTO on Alpha: the Mahler Fifth (available, per Amazon, on March 14 - the first recording in a new Mahler cycle from Jarvi). But this time, I'm hoping Apple will give me my Dolby Atmos fix right from the beginning.
