Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

Little Matty Haimovitz? For real?

I STILL remember the tears running down his face as he left the stage after he'd screwed up (presumably - I actually didn't hear it from where I was sitting in the green room) in Saint-Saens' Allegro appassionato with his mom at the piano. From what I can tell these days, he pretty much confines himself to off-the-beaten-track repertoire, and I'm surprised he would throw his hat in the ring in the Bach Cello Suites.

BTW, I "cut my teeth" in the Bach Cello Suites with the Casals recordings (on EMI/Angel "Great Recordings of the Century" LP's). I never did like them, and, when I finally got a copy of Starker's earliest performances (on the Period label), I jumped for joy. It was as if the wool had been removed from my ears! (If only the wool could have covered up Casals' grunting, but alas. . . ) The Starker recordings were a revelation, and I subsequently acquired his accounts on EMI/Pathe and Mercury. As I said before though, I missed his Sefel and RCA accounts.

But now, as you suggest, we have the luxury of multiple wonderful performances!
