I don't think about it often. I'm approaching my mid-50s - enjoyed the search and social aspects of music stores - and rarely use physical media any more. This morning I've been listening to Portico Quartet's Gondwana-era music. One album played back locally and the other two streamed from Qobuz - all though a network player. I listened to each album completely. It has been a morning of enjoyable music - some I'd not heard before - that could not have occurred without streaming because I didn't own the two streamed albums. I will purchase them soon, probably. That is common for me because I like the experience of listening to full albums.
Tomorrow, I return to work and will be listening to Spotify playlists in the background. I will notice new music that I will want to explore further, later in the week probably - I will explore using Spotify, perhaps Qobuz, Bandcamp' record label sites etc. and find a mixture of "singles" I will add to Spotify playlists and bands and albums I will favourite in Qobuz and possibly purchase downloads.
Just because streaming makes convenience and song-level gratification possible, does not make it mandatory. At times I'd like to own a vinyl system again, thinking that greater intention and attention might be nice in a tired and distracted state... but intention and attention are my choice: I can be intentional with streaming, even if it is not as essential. Important for me is attention to the act of listening to music - to the music and environment (and awareness of those spinning thoughts) - and physical media is not required for that.
I enjoy both exploring and listening to music. I enjoy both intentional and background listening. I enjoy both building an audio system (though I think about it rarely now) and music. I enjoy the music store experience and the convenience of streaming. These dichotomies are merely useful constructs and short cuts; not real. Not opposing ends of a continuum either. There are lots of ways to listen.
