One can capture the music's "soul" with digitized music..... The problem is that it's so difficult to do so....... And it seems to be easiest to get it with 16/44...... Resolutions below that lose too much information, resolutions above that generate excessive RFI.
I still believe RFI permeating the audio gear and AC lines is the biggest issue with digital music playback...... And until there is an extremely low-powered DAC product that doesn't emit so much RFI, the problem will just perpetuate.
DAC chips have improved in recent time at a relative level, but nothing ground-breaking has come forth (that I know of). I do think "less is more" when it comes to DACs and power consumption.
