Tone controls aren't much help in correcting most system deficiencies. However, with a well-balanced system, they can help with some recordings. My Quad 44 preamp, which is very fine, has its 'Tilt' control which will tilt the FR up or down some from about 100-10000 Hz, shelving above and below that. It can be helpful with some recordings. It's not as versatile as an EQ but I think it is more useful than most bass and treble controls.
