Nice.

The Cambridge SPDIF signal level looks to be woefully out of spec. The TX output level should typically be about 0.5 - 0.6 Vpp with many consumer devices outputting more. The minimum input level for a SPDIF receiver is spec'd to be 0.2 Vpp. No wonder the mod sounds better. Was everything 75-Ohm terminated for your measurements ?
