Unclear about concept - digital volume control (long)

This is a question about digital volume control. The practical question comes later in this post.

I don't have a "streamer", but I do have a phone and a tablet that I believe perform the same functions as a streamer.

Seems to me a streamer provides a digital signal to a DAC that is then converted to an analog signal. Or, in my case an android phone provides a digital signal to a portable DAC/headphone amp.

Both the phone and the DAC/amp have a volume control.

I assume, but don't know, that the DAC/amp adjusts the volume in the analog domain.

The phone adjusts the volume in the digital domain.

QUESTION: Does adjusting the volume in the digital domain in any way influence the dynamic range of the signal provided to the DAC/amp? Or, put a different way, is there an optimal volume setting on the phone to maximize the dynamic range presented to the DAC/amp?
