The D to A translation is going to have an impact on the content, some a lot less than others. If elements of the original source are lost in translation, then no amount of post processing can recover them.From my experience, more 'soul' is lost in the delta sigma I have heard, rendering the music noticeably less musical. It just feels sterile.
I do not sense any real limitation with either R2R or delta sigma with regards to resolution - that might be more a factor of the rest of the system or the post processing in the DAC.
I do not equate sterility with increased resolution, so that may be a personal limitation.
