That's not an easy thing to formulate if you are mixing brands. But you do bring up a good point about quality. You should always pay attention to the level of QUALITY that each component has with respect to the others in the signal chain.The most common mistake that I see being made is people using a cheap cd(dvd?) player as a transport and then expecting their DAC to take care of everything once it locks onto the signal. I think the transport is just as important as the DAC and the money that you spend on it should be reasonably close to what you have in the DAC, if not more.
This is hard to nail down though if you are mixing brands and probably another can of worms if you are considering your computer as your transport.
