Maybe your Onkyo is an overachiever and should be enjoyed for what it is.
Otherwise, for little money ($100 or less) I would investigate the Pioneer DV-578a if you can get one with a right of return. I haven't heard the NAD, but I bought the Pioneer to use as a transport, only to find it sounds almost as good as the dac I have, which cost $1000 about 10 yrs ago, and which I prefer over some newer dacs that I have heard.
For a little more money ($150), I would check out the Oppo 970 dvd player. Search around here for more info.
