Rule Number One: If it won't play SACD, DVD-A and the several other 24 bit / 96K or better DVD type optical media, you won't ever be happy with it.Cambridge has both types, so pick one of their DVD players from US$250 (or less). " ... Cambridge [DVD-87] plays DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, SACD, DVD+R/RW, CD, MP3, and Kodak Picture CD formats. ..."
(You can always eBay the DVD-87 away and change brands if you find something better, but CD only players are too common to fetch a decent price anymore.)
Best advise = go cheap until you become expert in picking something better.
