I beleive we've discussed this before. As an ex musician my ear is far from academic. There is certainly no such thing as perfect transparancy but some companies clearly strive for that ideal (like Benchmark,AKG Thiel etc) and come very close while others clearly "engineer" the sound to create a sonic signature that will appeal to the naive layperson.
