FWIW, I have had a hard based system for at least 2 1/2 years, and had no problems with skips and have REGULAR ide drives...there is NO need for the drives you are talking about.Most of the issues with pops and clicks can be fixed and eliminated. You won't get them if you have a dedicated machine for audio, or a super fast one. Most of the time, setting the play back program's priority to something above normal, like realtime cures the drop outs.
My sub 1ghz pc has no problem playing back .wav files and acting as a 3 way crossover too.
This is not an isolated thing either, there are tons of people at the PC audio forum using normal drives with great results, and free software like Foobar for playback.
