Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

How good can internal DACs be in Sony DA4ES? Tried multi-channel input from

a couple of DVD players and my HDDVD player. The HDDVD player is actually supposed to have some pretty sophistocated DACs, but when I switch to the DVD input and let the receiver decode, the sound is clearer, more defined, and more open. I was surprised at this, as the DA4ES is several years old now, and I thought it probably didn't have as good DACs as are available now.

I thought I would get better sound by letting the player decode the disc and go into the 5.1 analog input, but that is not the case. Yes, I am using some fairly decent copper interconnects from the DVD to the multi-channel input, specifically a pair of Audio Art IC-1s.

I have not yet tried a high-end CD player. I think I will check it out with my new Oppo 970 universal player.

Perhaps it is just due to the addition of another set of ICs in the chain.
