I just purchased an NAD C542 player about a week or two ago to replace my Panasonic DVD player (DVD-A bug, understand).I find that the first 30 to 50 hours of playback sounded rather constricted and thin. After the 50 hour mark, things have opened up remarkably! It actually is a very smooth player without sounding dull and lifeless. If one word can define this player's overall sound, its "pleasing". No hardness, great 3-D depth and a WIDE soundstage (I hesitate to say analog, but that really says it to me).
'Nuff of my blabbin'. Just go out and try one. Take a good cross section of CDs with you (and if you have some HDCDs, bring, the player does them seriously good justice...)...
Cheers,
