I've had a Pacific Valve unmodded DAC-AH for about 3 months now. I've really enjoyed its performance. Thinking that there's always better, I decided to try a modded version from DIY Club and have listened to it for the past week. I've constantly had it on with a cd playing most of the time for the last 6 days. At this point, the unmodded DAC wins hands down. It has better detail, less edginess, sweeter highs and mids, better instrumental timbre, wider soundstage, and more focused imaging than the modded version. There hasn't been much of an evolution in the sound of the modded version over the last 6 days, so I'm not sure that I can expect a whole lot of improvement. I do, however, think that the umnodded one took some time to reach the qualitites I like, but it was such an improvement to what I had before, that I don't have a sense of how long it took?
Should I expect the sound of the modded version to turn around? Perhaps the lesson is that a mod is just a mod, not necessarily an improvement. Any suggestions for breaking in the DAC (does it make a difference if a signal is going into the dac or does it just have to be on)?
