Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Yeah

No, not "of course, without an intermediary computer". If you don't have an intermediary computer then it just means that there's a computer _inside_ the source component itself, which is an primitive and downright ass-stupid approach to digital music, IMO. What if you have a second music system? Then that digital music server is for all intent and purpose exactly like having an intermediary computer. Many audiophiles are curious about the new technology, yet they insist on an child-simple system that they can use. That's about all that systems like those from Olive accomplish - they're essentially a dumbing down of computer based audio.

It's all over the place, although the reasons for adoption by the "high end" and more general consumer audio manufacturers differs slightly. At least at the marketing end of things. The high end will push it as being superior due to not having to spin a CD and do real-time reading of audio from that CD. Decreased jitter and blah blah blah and physics and marketing and blah blah blah and engineering and marketing and blah blah blah. The same shit we've been subjected to since the dawn of CDs. Consumer audio companies will push the platform for its convenience, and simplicity of whole house audio (which spells $$$ for most of the remaining brick and mortar audio dealers).

We've only seen a fraction of what will soon be on the market. It's obvious already that no two will have exactly the same approach. That in itself is going to be a major hurdle to the typical audiphile, many of whom appear to need to be told what's "best".
