Home Digital Drive

Upsamplers, DACs, jitter, shakes and analogue withdrawals, this is it.

Yes, both formats can be made to sound very good indeed!

Many people who love the sound of LPs have tweaked their setups to overcome the well-known problems with LP playback. They achieve very good sound. Then they insert an expensive CD player without any attention to the particular problems of CD playback, and are disappointed in the CD sound. It is natural to blame the medium, but the problem is with the setup.

CD playback suffers particularly from horizontal vibration of the transport, and RF electrical noise. A computer-based player eliminates the CD drive servo mechanism's sensitivity to horizontal vibration, but may increase the problems with RF noise.

There is plenty of information here and on the Tweaks asylum about these issues. Once you achieve a good setup, you will find that you enjoy CDs so much that you cannot go back to the pitch distortion of off-center LPs.
