poor coax digital signal from CDP to external DAC

160.79.139.10

Need some help here -- I just purchased a HeadRoom amp with a built-in DAC, and am using the digital coaxial output from a Creek CD43MkII CDP serving as the transport. Problem: sound from Creek's coax dig out to external DAC in HeadRoom is crackly with drop-outs, distortion and sometimes no signal at all. I have triple-checked all connections, tried two different coaxial cables, and played with powering up and down CDP and DAC all to no avail. The Creek's analog output works fine with the headphone amp (so I'm assuming the player's transport output to its internal DAC is OK). As a last resort, I tried another CDP with a coaxial digital output with the HeadRoom amp/DAC and it works perfectly. Unfortunately the Creek CDP does not have an optical digital output, so I could not try that route.

So, what is the problem and how can this be fixed? I would like to use the Creek as the transport rather than the other machine if possible. Is the coaxial digital output defective on the Creek or is this a problem with the external DAC not being able to lock on to the digital output from the Creek? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
