What you are doing is fine, no problem at all. This thing is an incredible value no matter how you use it. It's even a great RTA for the money, though it's a pain to lug around.I currently use one DEQ2496 on bass channels only. Analog in to analog out. I think it works great. I've only spent a few hours messing with EQ settings (I use a combination of parametric and graphic EQ) but was very pleased with the results. With something like this, there's no end to the amount of time you could spend messing with it, but at the same time, you can get pretty good results just keeping things fairly simple. My main goal was to eliminate the biggest peaks. The next goal was to keep the channel responses consistent.
In my bench tests, it doesn't look too bad. Much better than a cheap all-analog Behringer crossover I tested once. Main weakness of DEQ2496 is in the analog output at high frequencies, which shows distortion rising to about the 0.02% level. Still not horrible, but it looks like plain old analog slew rate limiting which could easily have been fixed by using a slightly better opamp. Problem completely went away when I substituted another DAC, so I can't fault the ADC at all. (Just like with computer soundcards, it always seems the input ADC is much better than the output DAC, and even there, the main problem is with the analog circuitry after the DAC, not the DAC itself.) I don't think there's a problem with the 24 bit AKG brand converters used at all, not long ago those were highly praised in other products. If only they used opamps of the same caliber as the converters, it would be a giant killer.
But as a digital only unit, there's no lmitation at all.
