FWIW, the Reference Recordings HDCDs that I have sound at least as good, if not better on my (non-HDCD) XA-777ES as they did on the Ultech UCD-100 HDCD player that I owned before. Although, I admit that I'm not so anal as to have done a side-by-side A/B comparison.One of the things that I thought I heard on the HDCD playback was the "peak extend" kicking in. On the "Big Band Basie" record, it sounded like some of the soloists were "jumping out" at you, which was kinda weird.
And, as you would say Charles, everything else is certainly not equal in those two setups.
