I turned off the sleep mode on my Phillips when I was breaking it in, and left it off as I continued to use the player. When the player seemed to be getting fussy about playing DVD's (usually related to dirt or scratches on rentals), I turned the sleep mode back on, and it seemed to improve the performance.It could be that the sleep mode is there because the players are not designed to be powered on all the time.
