Audible scraping sound from speakers when playing some CDs - any clues?

Doesn't happen on many CDs, but some it does, particularly 24/96 discs and the odd remaster.
It sounds as though something is scraping in time with the speed of the disc spinning (gets slower as the disc progresses). but it's udible through the speakers, not from the player (clocked and modded Sony CDP-508ES) itself.
Any ideas on the source and possible cure?
