I've lived with a CDP-X779ES for more than a decade. A couple of years ago I thought I should explore some other players to see if I had been missing something. I chose two candidates that were receiving a lot of internet buzz and praise:1. A Marantz SA-8260, and it was no contest: the Sony trampled all over it.
2. An Ack Dac -- what a piece of junk! My old NAD $300 player sounded better.
I'm still trying to convince myself that I should try some more players, but I don't consider it a priority anymore; maybe if the Sony begins to falter I'll reconsider, but for the time being I'm happy with the 779ES.
