I must disagree with most of the points in your post. I certainly would not characterize the DAC1 as having "problems" or being hard on the ears. To the contrary. This has not been my experience at all, or others that I know with the unit. I have had 3 units at various times and I know of no one who has heard crackles from the volume control.Like you, I have used the fixed outputs into a passive preamp. But, I prefer using the DAC1 direct into the amp v. into the passive. Surprisingly, I found using the DAC1 direct to produce more detail than with a passive pre. This is one area where you would think the passive would be better. And I was using a Reference Line Preeminence 1a II passive, one of the best, some would say the best ever. Yet, the DAC1 direct was clearly better, even disregarding other advantages of using the DAC1's built in preamp and having the advantages of gain, possible extra dynamics etc.
I think the DAC1 is a great unit, especially for the price.
