dCS P8i Volume Control implementation?

Does anyone have details about the P8i's digital volume control implementation? What resolution will I loose in lower volume listening?
I was curious to read JA's review in Stereophile commenting that the P8i direct to an Amp is about as good as digital can get today (paraphrased from memory). And wondering if I should explore that angle further... ie. eliminating my Pre-Amp in the chain.
Also does anyone know if dCS' new Transport/DAC combination (T8e/DAC8e) will also have volume control?
