I did choose one over the other and it was the Ayre but at the time, only a CX-7. Against the CX-7 the Opus had a bit more detail and a slightly better soundstage on 3 of 5 CDs that I used to demo them. Those differences were not enough to justify the difference in price, in my opinion. I used the money I saved to buy Audience Au-24 ICs and have been very happy with the results. I have since had the player upgraded to Evolution status and I would hazard to guess that the differences I had heard when comparing the two, would be less if non-existant. Good luck with your decision.
