As luck would have it while marking the cable legs positive and negative today one of the banana plugs slipped off together with the shrink-wrap into my hand. This revealed the end of the bundle of wires which had been soldered together and attached to the connector. Taking a chance I positioned the shrink-wrap/banana plug back onto the wire bundle and pressed firmly so that the two pieces were now rejoined. It works perfectly. I realize I should have applied fresh solder but for now this is working just fine.
